About the Department

The Department of Physics of Basirhat College started its journey in the year 1969. Since its inception it remains one of the most enriched and productive department of the college. The faculty consists of experienced teachers, acknowledged for their contribution to the field of teaching and research in Physics.

The department has a good and up to date laboratory for undergraduate teaching. The departmental library has good collection of text and reference books. Interactive classroom teaching is going to be introduced.


Dr. Raghu Nath Bera department of Physics

Dr. Raghu Nath Bera, Assistant Professor.
Raghu Nath Bera received his M. Sc. Degree in physics in 1993 from Vidyasagar University with first class first. He did his Ph. D. on organic semiconductors from Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science in 1999. From 2000 -2002 he was an STA Fellow in Dr M Tokumoto’s group at Nanotechnology Research Institute, National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology, Japan. From 2002-2003 he was also a Postdoctoral Fellow in Dr K Yase’s group at Photonics Research Institute, AIST, Japan. In these three years he worked on OLED and organic solar cells. In 2003 he moved to UK as a Postdoctoral Fellow to work with Prof I D W Samuel (University of St Andrews) and Prof P L Burn ( University of Oxford). In UK he was involved in developing highly efficient OLED until 2005. He joined in Basirhat College in 2006. He was also a Visiting Scientist in 2010 at Tokyo Institute of Technology, National Defense Academy and Photonics Research Institute, Japan. Currently his research interest is organic semiconductors and nanomaterials.

Prof. Paramita Mallick department of Physics

Prof. Paramita Mallick, HOD, Assistant Professor.
Paramita Mallick has obtained her Master degree in physics from University of Calcutta with Neuclear and Particle Physics as an area of specialization. She is interested in High Energy Physics, Statistical Physics, Bio Physics, Computer etc. She was former JS in BARC, Trombey, Mumbai. She is also having teaching experience of ten years.

Dr. Sanghamitra Das department of Physics

Dr. Sanghamitra Das, Assistant Professor.
Dr. Sanghamitra Das has joined the department of Physics on 7th April, 2015 as an Assistant Professor. She did B.Sc in Physics from Lady Brabourne College, Calcutta University and M.Sc in Physics from Rajabazar Science College, Calcutta University in the year 1999 and 2001 respectively. She did Ph.D from Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science, Kolkata on Quantum Many Body Methods and obtained Ph.D degree from Jadavpur University in the year 2010. She did her post-doctoral research from Budapest University of Technology and Economics, Budapest, Hungary and Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science, Kolkata from Oct., 2008 to Sept., 2010 and Nov., 2010 to Jan., 2011 respectively. Her post doctoral research was on Computational Quantum Many Body Methods. She served the department of Physics, St. Xavier's College (Autonomous) Kolkata as an Assistant Professor from Jan., 2011 to April, 2015 initially against leave vacancy and then on contract.

Dr. Purnendu Chakraborty department of Physics

Dr. Purnendu Chakraborty, Assistant Professor.
Dr. Chakraborty obtained  B.Sc. and M.Sc. from Visva-Bharati, Santiniketan. He did  Ph.D  in  Theoretical Particle Physics from Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics, Kolkata. Subsequently he worked at SINP (Kolkata), University of Minnesota (USA), Bose Institute (Kolkata), Physical Research Laboartory (Ahmedabad) and Variable Energy Cyclotron Centre (Kolkata). His research interest is Statistical Field Theory with emphasis on Heavy Ion Collision phenomenology.

Dr. Mahuya Chakrabarti department of Physics

Dr. Mahuya Chakrabarti, Assistant Professor.
Dr. Mahuya Chakrabarti  has joined as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Physics on 12.04.2017. She received her degrees (B. Sc., M. Sc.) from the University of Calcutta. She has done her research on “Position Annihilation Studies on High Temperatures Superconduction”. She received her Ph.D degree from the University of Calcutta as well. Her area of interest is Experimental Condensed Matter Physics. She has also published a considerable number of articles in internationally reputed journals and also has authored two books.
