Department of Physics

About the Department

The Department of Physics of Basirhat College started its journey in the year 1969. Since its inception it remains one of the most rich and productive departments of the college. The faculty consists of experienced teachers who are acknowledged for their contribution to the field of teaching and research in Physics.

The department has a good and up to date laboratory for undergraduate teaching. The departmental library has good collection of text and reference books. Interactive classroom teaching is going to be introduced.

Head of the Department : Dr. Mahuya Chakraborty

Dr. Raghu Nath Bera, Asst. Prof., M.Sc., Ph.D.

Raghu Nath Bera received his M. Sc. Degree in physics in 1993 from Vidyasagar University with first class first. He did his Ph. D. on organic semiconductors from Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science in 1999. From 2000 -2002 he was an STA Fellow in Dr M Tokumoto's group at Nanotechnology Research Institute, National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology, Japan. From 2002-2003 he was also a Postdoctoral Fellow in Dr K Yase's group at Photonics Research Institute, AIST, Japan. In these three years he worked on OLED and organic solar cells. In 2003 he moved to UK as a Postdoctoral Fellow to work with Prof I D W Samuel (University of St Andrews) and Prof P L Burn ( University of Oxford). In UK he was involved in developing highly efficient OLED until 2005. He joined in Basirhat College in 2006. He was also a Visiting Scientist in 2010 at Tokyo Institute of Technology, National Defense Academy and Photonics Research Institute, Japan. Currently his research interest is organic semiconductors and nanomaterials.

Dr. Purnendu Chakraborty, Asst. Prof., M. Sc. Ph.D.

Dr. Chakraborty did his B.Sc and M.Sc from VisvaBharati, Santiniketan. He did his Ph.D work on Theoretical Particle Physics from Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics, Kolkata. Subsequently he worked at SINP (Kolkata), University of Minnesota (USA), Bose Institute (Kolkata), Physical Research Laboartory (Ahmedabad) and Varaible Energy Cyclotron Centre (Kolkata). His research interest is Statistical Field Theory.

Prof. Paramita Mallick,Asst. Prof., M.Sc.

Paramita Mallick has obtained her Master degree in physics from University of Calcutta with Neuclear and Particle Physics as an area of specialization. She is interested in High Energy Physics, Statistical Physics, Bio Physics, Computer etc. She was former JS in BARC, Trombey, Mumbai. She is also having teaching experience of ten years.

Dr. Mahuya Chakraborty, Asst. Prof., M. Sc. Ph.D.

Dr. Mahuya Chakrabarti has joined as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Physics on 12.04.2017. She received her degrees (B. Sc., M. Sc.) from the University of Calcutta. She has done her research on "Position Annihilation Studies on High Temperatures Superconduction". She received her Ph.D degree from the University of Calcutta as well. Her area of interest is Experimental Condensed Matter Physics. She has also published a considerable number of articles in internationally reputed journals and also has authored two books.

Dr. Priyanka Chowdhury, Assistant Professor, M.Sc., Ph.D.

Dr. Priyanka Chowdhury has joined Basirhat College on 23.02.21. Previously she was working as an Assistant Professor at Mahishadal Raj College (2017-2021). She has receicved her Ph.D degree in Theoretical physics (Theoretical quantum information) in 2017 from the University of Calcutta. Her area of interest is the study of quantum information theory dealing with the duality between the existence of an event without obsevation and existence revealed by observation. She has published research papers in journals of international repute , notably the renowned journel, Physical Review Letters.
