About the Department
The department of Physiology, Basirhat College, is the glorious department affiliated to West Bengal State University achieving the glory of running B.Sc. Honours and General courses successfully in West Bengal, India. It started in the year 1983 under the University of Calcutta, although the subject physiology was taught as a general (pass) subject at that time. Later, in the year 2002, the Honours course was introduced in this department.
Now, The department has five full-time faculties holding the positions of Assistant Professor and SACT (State Aided College Teacher) along with one full-time laboratory assistant. The department is equipped with laboratories like Histology, Biochemistry and Experimental Physiology for both Honours and General students, where the experiments are done on both human and animal subjects. The department also has a library for the students. Apart from the university syllabus this department also performs several activities like:
1. Educational excursion and project work for the final semester students.
2. Departmental seminars and online webinars.
3. Wall magazines.
Overall, the Department of Physiology, Basirhat College pronounces that, Knowledge fuels the development and progress of humanity.

Dr. Jyotirmoy Sikdar (HOD), Assistant Professor, M.Sc., Ph.D.
Dr. Jyotirmoy Sikdar has joined the Department of Physiology on 24th July, 2019. He achieved his B.Sc. degree in Physiology from University of Calcutta in the year 2010. He also received his M.Sc. degree from University of Calcutta with specialization in ‘Biophysics and Electrophysiology’ in the year 2012. He was awarded PhD degree in 2021 from University of Calcutta under the title,” Biophysical and biochemical studies on erythrocyte membrane proteins among cigarette smokers”. He has also qualified GATE in Life sciences in the year 2012 and 2013 and also CSIR-UGC NET in Life sciences on December, 2015. His field of interest is molecular biology, biochemistry, hematological and microscopic techniques.
