NSS Admission 

The N.S.S unit of our college is under the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports, Ministry of H.R.D and Government of India. Every year 100 students from first year are admitted to this unit. The scheme is used to organize various social service programmes throughout the year in the college campus as well as in different villages. It is a pleasure to mention that our college unit represented Calcutta University in three National Integration camps held at Cuttack, Shillong and Amritsar.

A glimpse of the activities of N.S S unit of Basirhat in the year 2015-16 college is provided below :

Training

N.S.S unit conducted extensive training classes to teach the NCC ideals to the volunteers. They were taught how to be good citizen of India and about the social responsibilities of a citizen. They were also taught to make up mind to take part in any kind of social service programme, if the necessity arises and to practice the motto of N.S.S - "Not Me But You." The training was followed by an examination on 07.03.2016 where almost all the volunteers proved their commitment.

College cleaning and bush whack

A one day camp was held in the college on 08. 12. 2015 to clean the underwoods and creepers from the college campus and neighbourhood. 192 N.S.S volunteers being divided into 20 groups cleaned the college campus. College teachers and N.S.S officer also participated in the said camp which motivated the volunteers. Through the programme our volunteers were trained to take part in any social service activity and develop work culture among them.

Mass literacy programme

40 female and 32 male volunteers of N.S.S unit regularly visited the slum area. They collected the poverty stricken slum boys and girls and taught them regularly and guided them towards literacy.

First Aid Medical Camp

Basirhat college N.S.S unit arranged medical camp on 19.01.2016. The unit is now equipped with modern first aid tools like 1) Automatic Blood pressure monitor 2) Digital thermometer 3) Automatic blood sugar monitor) 4) Weighing scale 5) First aid box and medicines. All the teaching staff, non teaching staff, retired employees of Basirhat college and students took advantage from this solemn effort.

Observation of National Wash Day

The N.S.S unit observed National Hand Wash day on 22.11.2015.

Participation in Basirhat Sanskriti-O-Swastho mela

A team of 98 N.S.S volunteers participated in the much colorful inauguration programme including the rally of 5th Basirhat Sanskrit-O-Swastho mela held at Basirhat Prantik Maidan from 11.12.2015 to 21.12.2015.

Participation in Chhatra-Yuva Utsav 2015-16

67 N.S.S volunteers and programme officer of the unit participated in Chhatra-Yuva Utsav 2015-16 held at Basirhat college. Besides participation, N.S.S volunteers also worked hard to ensure the smooth running of the said programme.

Observance of world AIDS day

N.S.S unit observed world AIDS day to increase the awareness among the students about AIDS. 131 volunteers and 83 college students participated in the programme.

Participation in employability training by TATA Consultancy Services

15 N.S.S volunteers participated in 100 hours employability training programme by T.C.S and initiated by N.S.S unit of W.B.S.U. Almost all of them are S.C, S.T or minority student. Eight volunteers were successful.

Observance of Independence Day

The N.S.S unit observed the day with great reverence. Prof. Avijit Panigrahi hoisted the National flag. After a short speech by Prof. Panigrahi, N.S.S volunteers performed cultural programme like dance, mime based on patriotic songs and freedom fight respectively. The programme ended with national anthem. 109 N.S.S volunteers participated in the programme.

Observance of Republic Day

The N.S.S unit celebrated Republic day on 26th January 2016 with due respect. Prof. Hirankanti Mukherjee, former N.S.S programme officer of Basirhat college hoisted the national flag which was followed by a speech by him regarding the significance of the day. Then the programme officer of the N.S.S unit in his short speech spoke about the contribution of matryrs and heroes who showed courage and bravery for the country. 116 N.S.S volunteers participated in the programme.

Observance of Netaji's Birth Day

The N.S.S unit of the college observed Netaji's birth day on 23rd Janauary, 2016. Prof. Hiran Kanti Mukherjee, former N.S.S programme officer, participated in the programme. N.S.S volunteers presented cultural programme on the life and activities of this great son of mother India.

Swach Bharat Abhiyan

To highlight the concept of Swach Bharat Abhiyan, N.S.S volunteers of Basirhat college unit, being divided into several groups frequently cleaned slum villages. The cut underwoods and creeper, set fires in the heaps of garbage and cleaned muddy villages. The volunteers also campaigned about these works to the village people. N.S.S programme officer also took part in the programme.
