About the Department
Honours course of Geography started from the year 2004. The course is currently affiliated under WBSU.Students of Geography honours are required to take up two other subjects referred to as General papers. Geography honours students have to take two of these subjects a. Political Science, b. Economics.
The strength of this department is nearly hundred percent attendance of students in Honours as well as in General classes. Apart from this, the Department has a highly motivated and dedicated teaching faculty that leads to good relationship between students and teachers.Along with regular teaching and learning classes, the Department is also planning to arrange state and national level seminars and student welfare programmes.
Faculties
Dr. Aditi Matilal, Assistant Professor, M.A., PhD.
Dr. Matilal secured her Master's degree in Geography from Jawaharlal Nehru University. She also posseses a P.G diploma in GIS and Remote sensing awarded by Jadavpur University. Her area of specialization is Regional planning and regional development. Her doctoral work centers around Rural economy, gender issues , women empowerment of socially, economically and environmentally marginalised communities. She joined Basirhat College in the year 2017. Professor Aditi Matilal secured her doctoral degree from University of Calcutta in June 2019.Her topic of research was “Significance of rural credit in the socio-economic development of Southern part of West Bengal”. Dr. Rajat Halder, Associate. Professor, M.A, B.Ed, Ph.D.
Dr. Rajat Haldar has completed M.A in Geography from the University of Calcutta in the year 2003. He has done Ph .D on Pattern of demographic changes in relation to development of Bangaon, Basirhat and Barasat subdivisions of North 24 Parganas district during the period 1951 to 2010 in the year 2014. Dr. Madhab Mondal, Assistant Professor, M.A , PhD.
Professor Madhab Mondal obtained his M.A in geography in the year 2003 from GuruGhasidas University, Bilaspur, Chattisgarh. He secured his doctoral degree in geography from University of Calcutta in 2018. His topic of PhD is ‘Geomorphic Problems of the Middle Ichamati River Basin, West Bengal, India”. His areas of interest include geomorphology, geo tectonics, hydrology, climatology, soil geography. He joined Basirhat College as an Assistant Professor on 03/ 07/ 2020. Read More..
Prof. Susmita Halder, State Aided College Teacher, M.Sc., B.Ed.
Prof. Halder joined this college on 02.01.2010. She studied in the University of Calcutta and received her B.Sc and M.Sc. degrees from there. Prof. Mousume Ghosh joined the Department of Geography on 01.09.2008. She obtained her B.Sc. from the University of Calcutta and M.Sc from Kanpur University.
