BASIRHAT COLLEGE LIBRARY: AN OVERVIEW

Basirhat College Library has a well-equipped, spacious and efficiently maintained library carrying around 33,588 books, huge back journals, e-journals and access to several online databases catering to the academic needs of the students and the faculty. It was set up on 16th November 1947 at Basirhat Town Hall, when the College was established. From the very inception the college had its own library, though very small. Afterwards the college was shifted at the present location. Over the year, it has undergone considerable modernization and expansion and has been gradually enriching in its quantity and quality. It has been a source of knowledge and support for the students as well as the teachers. The library is almost computerized and has a user-friendly interface. The library provides open-shelf access and easy borrowing and lending facilities and offers a range of membership benefits to the students and the faculty.

 

Aim of the College Library

College Library is the store-house of knowledge and now we call it an “Information Centre” also. The main objective of the Library is to fulfill the needs and demands of our Students/ Teachers/ Staff at minimum time. The College library also helps to increase the knowledge of our users and to assist the students to be successful in their higher studies.

 

Motto of the College Library

Our motto is to respect and follow the five laws of Library Science introduced by Dr. S. R. Ranganathan-

·            Books are for use.

·            Every reader his/her Books.

·            Every Book its reader.

·            Save the time of the reader.

·            The Library is a growing organism.

 

We have three major Libraries. Besides, each and every department has its own departmental library.

CENTRAL LIBRARY

The Central Library is an integral part of the institution. The library supports the aims of the college towards imparting education and providing the latest information to the students for developing their quest for knowledge and self reliance. It is located in the North-West corner of the 2nd floor of the main building adjacent to the Bengali department. Covering approximately 2593 sq. ft., with a seating capacity of over a 50, with very good collection of reading and reference books, journals and periodicals along with Internet facilities. With the long tradition of collective efforts of the staff members of the library, we have been striving hard to meet the present day demands of our users by rendering various services. We seek to do in a personalized and hospitable environment in spite of some infrastructural limitations. 


 MORNING LIBRARY

The Morning Library is situated in the South-East corner of the ground floor of the main building. The area of the Library is approximately 700 sq. ft. with good reading room facilities and good collection of reading and reference books.

BENGALI PG LIBRARY

The Bengali PG Library is located at 2nd floor of the main building at department of Bengali. The area of the Library is approx 300 sq. ft. with good reading room facilities and very good collection of reading and reference books.

 

DEPARTMENTAL LIBRARY

Each and every departments has its own departmental library for the benefit of students and teachers. To supplement the services provided by the central library, we have 16 departmental libraries which is fully controlled by the respective Departments. The list of the books available in some departmental libraries can be viewed from the computer of the central library.
