History of the College

 

Basirhat College as an educational institution starts its journey during a momentous period in our nation’s history: the independence of India. The moment of independence is the pivotal moment that determines the future of India. The establishment of this college in many ways shapes the imagined Indian future. It was 16th November, 1947 the foundation stone of the college was laid down by an eminent educationist and a national leader Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee. Since then the college has made a significant contribution in the development of countless young lives of Basirhat and its adjoining areas and the society at large. It has witnessed many souls of the soil rise to eminence.

Initially the college was housed in the Basirhat Town Hall. Later it was shifted to Late Khan Bahadur A.F.M Abdur Rahaman's residence at the heart of Basirhat Town. And finally the college was established in its present location. 

The institution now functions in three shifts - morning, day and evening. A considerable number of students both boys and girls, coming from villages and towns like Taki, Hingalgunge, Jogeshgunj, Samsernagar, Katihat, Deganga, Haroa, Baduria, Berachampa, enroll themselves in this college to obtain their graduate and postgraduate (Bengali) degrees in Arts, Science and Commerce.
